Artists Statement:
My ceramic vessels are completely hand
thrown and fired
in my studio. My work combines three processes. I
use the
"Raku" process,
often combined with "Naked Raku". I also use a vapor fuming
technique known as "Kosai". I enjoy these techniques because they
reflect the wild unpredictable island I live on, as well as the constant
volcanic activity.
In my work I strive to combine
a shape that brings to mind a lightness of form, melded with the appropriate
surface that compliments the shape. Within this format I
also attempt to bring to mind the textures, colors and imagery of the Big
Island without being to literal. I prefer to elicit a feeling of the
island using metaphors
of a sort as opposed to direct imagery
of island symbols such as dolphins and turtles.
Although I am mostly known for my ceramics,
I also do drawing, glass fusing and stained glass and just about anything else
that moves me. My goal
is to create beautiful work that people can enjoy gazing at and
provide a reminder of the Big Island in the process.
