After receiving her Bachelor
of Fine Arts degree at the University of Southern California, Amber continued
her education and received two Masters' degrees as well as two California
State teaching credentials. Amber taught at public high schools in California
for many years, teaching classes in ceramics, drawing, and jewelry making.
After moving to Hawaii in 2001, she focused on creating her own art and
on exhibiting. Since then her work has been in numerous shows
throughout the nation, and won many awards. She is crurrenttly exhibiting
in various galleries across the island of Hawaii.
Amber's love of Hawai'i is reflected
in her work. Her ceramic pottery is a metaphor for the textures of
her island home. Her drawings and sculpture also reflect her views on
living in hawaii.
She makes liberal use of
the "Naked Raku" firing process.. With this, , the black and white shadow
effect is created by coating the bisque ware with a raw clay slip which
she specially formulated to create tight cracks. As the slip dries, it cracks
away from the pot. In the smoking process, it acts as a mask protecting
some areas from the black smoke, yet allowing the cracks to be penitrated
by the carbonization.
